In response

In response to my rabbit troubles, Mrs T (who writes for the BBC and The View From Here) suggested I visit Intrepid Ideas' blog for my solution. Had a look at the bean shooter video and reckon this is definitely the way to go. Thanks, Jane and Mr Intrepid. Maybe I should get in touch with Rufus Hussey.

In response to my comment about heading down to the beach, Gary Davison (PaperBooks author of Fat Tuesday), in true Oliver-style, asked for more. More?!!!

Now, it always seems unfair to post pictures of a beach in summer knowing full-well that people on the other side of the hemisphere are struggling with winter blues. Seems like rubbing salt into the wound. But Gary's comment got me thinking: maybe they'll serve as a reminder of what's round the corner, something to look forward to. So, in this spirit, and in response to Gary's request, I grabbed the camera when I went for a run jog stumble down to the beach this morning and took a few shots for him.

Fantastic, Paul. you lucky so and so. How far is this from your house? Be careful how you answer this or you may have a family of lodgers heading for the airport today:) I think you should do a weekly post of pics from over there, especially this time of year. It'll give us lunatics who refuse to leave the homeland a much needed boost.

I've had another long look, they're getting better. Is there any surfing on this beach, Paul. I can see waves breaking, but it looks like there may be a few rocks there?

Don't get tempted by those Oz beaches, Gary, we've many just as good in Scotland without the box jellyfish, great whites and 30' salt-water crocodiles they've got waiting to nibble you, and we're only a mile or two up the road from you. More, as of today, Burns Day, 2009 is the 'Year of the Homecoming', when our great leader Mr Salmond has decreed that all Scots of the diaspora must return to Scotland and spend lots of money here. Both you and Paul have Scottish ancestors somewhere in your blood, surely? Just about everyone has.

Hmm, the beaches. This one - South Beach - is surrounded by reef, which makes it spectacular in many ways, Gary, but not the best for surfing. Good for swimming and snorkelling. However, our other main beach - East Beach - has no reef and is the patrolled surf beach (there are a couple of other surf spots too, although the locals are very territorial about them). East Beach attracts a few more people and is about a kilometre and a half away, so we tend to stick to South Beach which is, uh hum ... at least 500 metres away. Can be a tad rough in the winter, when the winds come directly from the Antarctic - but I like the drama of this too.

Definitely no box jellyfish or crocs at this end of the island, you scaremonger, you, Jon! They're a couple of thousand k. away. Every couple of years there might be a sighting of a tiger shark or bronze whaler, but the reef is protection from them. With its Gulf Stream, there might not be a lot of difference in the water temperature between here and Scotland though!

How absolutely gorgeous! I love being by the sea; the sound of crashing waves and the feel of the sea breezes... and so inspirational for writing. Big sigh.

Those pics have cost me a fortune, Paul. I've since been out and booked a holiday to spain for the summer. It was on the cards anyway, but a little Ozzy nudge made it a must. A bit of sun, Jon, and I'd be tempted!

Spain sounds good too, Gary. The prospect of that'll get you through the next couple of months, no worries.

Sometimes those sea breezes are akin to being slapped around the face with with a wet fish, Jane, but that's good too. In fact, whenever I'm away from the beach for a few days I always take a wet fish with me.
